The life of Anna Marie Klapp

Anna Marie Klapp is my third great-grandaunt. She was the first daughter born on 30 December 1830 in Istha, Germany, to Giese Klapp and Anna Elisabeth Kessler. You can read about her brothers, both named Johannes Klapp, here: https://ellajaneanne.com/2019/07/01/same-names-sigh/.

Anna married Johann Georg Adolf on 23 January 1854 in Ishta, Germany. Georg was born on 6 June 1828 in Istha, Germany. He is the son of Johannes Adolf and Anna Catherine Gerhold. Anna and Georg had six children over the next eleven years.

1. Margareta Adolf was born 13 August 1855 and died on 24 September 1855
2. Elisabeth Adolf was born 11 January 1858 and died on 30 October 1862
3. Female stillborn on 12 June 1860
4. Heinrich Adolf was born July 1861
5. Johannes Jacob Adolf was born 15 January 1865
6. Marie Elisabeth Adolf was born 28 April 1867

The first three children born to Georg and Anna died, one was stillborn, one died at about a month old, and one lived until four years old. Just eight months after the birth of their last child Marie Elisabeth, Georg passed away on 16 January 1868.

Two years later, Anna would marry Johann Martin Tanzglock on 26 January 1870 in Istha, Germany. Johann Martin was born on 17 October 1841 to Daniel Tanzglcok and Gertrud Elisabeth Hildebrand. He was a widower, and his first wife was Catharina Leipold. At this time, I have not located their marriage record or any kids they may have had together. In the marriage record of Johann Martian to Anna Marie Klapp, his first marriage to Catharina was noted. He was eleven years older than Anna.

Johann and Anna would have one set of twins, Julius and Daniel Tanzglock born on 18 May 1872. Julius died on 9 July 1872, and Daniel died on 18 August 1872. Anna had lost five of her eight children. She died just two years after the death of her twins, on 10 May 1874. She would leave behind her three children from her previous marriage Heinrich thirteen years old, Johannes, ten years old, and Marie, seven years old. I have done a little research to locate what happened to the children but have not found anything yet.

I had to know what happened to Anna Marie’s husband after she died. Nine months after the death of Anna, Johann Martin married Catherina Tripp on 13 February 1875. This marriage record lists both the previous marriages for Johann. They would have six children:

1. Johannes Tanzglock born on 22 February 1876
2. Luisa Tanzglock born on 12 May 1878 and died on 22 March 1880
3. Wilhelm Tanzglock born on 22 August 1881
4. Catherina Tanzglock born on 23 November 1884
5. Valantine Tanzglock born on 2 March 1887
6. Johann Carl Tanzglock born on 6 May 1889 and died on 6 August 1890

In almost every German Lutheran Church baptism record I have found a birth date, baptism date, parents’ names, and godparents’ names. As I was looking at the baptism records of Johann Martin and Catherina’s children, I noticed a familiar name in two of them. On Johannes’s baptism record, his godfather was Johannes Klapp III, Anna Marie Klapp’s brother. Anna Marie was Johann Martin’s second wife, they have no living children together, but her brother became the godfather for his son, born to his third wife. Also, in the baptism record of Wilhelm, the third child born to Johan Martin and Catherina was Johannes Klapp III mentioned, his godfather is Wilhelm Tanzglock, a factory worker but was represented by Valentin Klapp, son of the farmer Johannes Klapp III.

It was heartwarming to me that even though his sister had died, Johannes Klapp III still had a relationship with her widow and his family. Johannes Martin and Anna Marie had only been married for four years before she passed. In 1874 the population of Ishta was only 583. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istha)

Anna Catherine Tanzglock died on 4 October 1898 in Istha, Germany. She and Johann Heinrich had been married for 23 years. Johann Heinrich lived for another 19 years before he passed away on 16 December 1917 in Istha.

As usual, at the end of each of my blogs, I realize how much more research I need to complete. My next research project will be to learn what happened to each of the children born to Anna Marie in her first marriage and Johann Martin Tanzglock. It is at times like this I wish there were German census records. This would help trace this family and who they lived with. I have never located any census records for the areas my family lived in Germany.
